Texts:
MTH 229-232: Stewart, Calculus: Concepts and Contexts
In addition, all sections of MTH 229, 230, and 231 require a Lab Manual, either Computer or Calculator.
Laboratory Format:
All sections of MTH 229, 230, and 231 include two hours per week of laboratory experience.
Computer labs are scheduled in room 270MM or 170MM two days a week (both rooms are computer laboratories). Most daytime sections have laboratories on Wednesday and Friday, and so have 4 "hours" of lecture and 2 "hours" of lab per week. A few daytime sections have laboratories on Tuesday and Thursday, and so have 3 "hours" of lecture and 3 "hours" of lab per week. (An "hour" is fifty minutes for this purpose.) Evening sections are scheduled with 3 hours lecture and 2 hours lab per week, but because they are full hours, the total time is the same (300 minutes per week).
For an explanation of why we are using a laboratory approach, see page I-1 of your laboratory manual.
Course policy regarding calculators:
All sections will require a Texas Instruments TI-82 or TI-83 graphing calculator.
You should not take the official recommendation as meaning you must buy these specific models. If you already have a graphing calculator that you know how to use, in most cases it will be adequate. If you don't have one yet, Texas Instrument models are preferred.
Departmental policy forbids the use of calculators capable of symbolic differentiation or integration on the common final exams of MTH 229 and MTH 230.
Your instructor may also forbid them on some or all midterm exams. They may also be forbidden from use on exams in other classes such as MTH 231, 232, 233 (ask your instructor). Examples of calculator models excluded under this policy are the TI-89, TI-92, and HP-48. If you are using such a calculator, you do not necessarily need to buy another, but you do need to plan to use a different calculator on exams where they are forbidden.
Information regarding Common Final Examinations:
All sections of MTH 229 and MTH 230 on Main Campus take final exams during the special time period listed in the WSU Class Schedule for the Mathematics Common Examinations. This includes evening sections.
If you find you have a conflict with the final exam, tell your instructor and attempt to resolve it as soon as possible. Instructors should not accept pre-existing conflicts (such as jobs) as valid excuses for missing the final. Final exam times are published in the Class Schedule, so you can find out when your final exam will be. By registering for a course you accept responsibility for being at the final exam as scheduled.
Students in all mathematics and statistics classes are expected to bring a picture identification card (such as a WSU student ID or a drivers license) to the final exam.
The common finals for MTH 229 and MTH 230 will not contain any questions from optional sections. On midterm exams or quizzes, you will be responsible for material from optional sections covered in your section, unless your instructor says otherwise.
