Most of the documents and materials on this site are in the form of Mathematica "notebooks", interactive documents used by Mathematica(tm) software; they can be recognized by the ".nb" extension. If you do not have a copy of Mathematica on your computer, you will need to download MathReader, a free program (available for most platforms) that will allow you to view Mathematica notebooks. The notebooks require version 3.0 or higher of Mathematica or MathReader.
Warning: The Calculus notebooks require a package called calcE, which is not free. You will need to purchase this (reasonably priced) package in order to use these notebooks interactively. But that does not prevent you from reading and examining the notebooks. If you want to see how calcE works, download the notebooks "with results".
Important: In order for the notebooks to display as intended, you must place the stylesheet notebook LabStyles.nb in the subdirectory Configuration/FrontEnd/StyleSheets of your Mathematica directory.
Although Mathematica notebooks are in general platform independent, these notebooks have a small number of platform dependent items, such as external graphics and Quicktime movies (for MacOS). I have removed these items from the notebooks available for download, so they are in fact platform independent. In each set of notebooks the platform dependent items are included separately with instructions for placing them in the proper locations. The MacOS and Windows downloads actually each contain exactly the same files, with platform dependent items in both formats. The only difference is the compression type.
If you properly configure your web browser, individual notebooks will open directly in Mathematica or Mathreader. The first time you download such a notebook, you may be asked what application you want to use to open it. Navigate to the Mathematica application, and the notebook should open in Mathematica. Your browser will probably remember to use Mathematica in the future. If not, it's simplest just to save the files to disk. Experts may know that our server is sending these files as MIME type "application/mathematica".
For platforms other than Windows or Mac OS, I suggest downloading the Windows .zip files, or downloading the individual notebooks.
